Note: I have a photo from an ebay auction of a supposedly 1961 (E1 ser. #(May) ) that shows it to be the post June style. I also saw a K1xxxxx(10/61) Continental that had an Ideale 42 saddle on it. Looked like it could have been original although the bike had other non original parts on it.

10 speed with the Huret front derailleur cable operated by a lever on the down tube (~2/62). 50 to 91 gear range. This is the gear range printed in the consumer brochure and Dealer. I think it is a misprint though as the it actually calculates out to 51 to 90, and that would be with 27" wheels. With the 26" wheels the bike actually had it calculates at 49 to 87. Huret (47/50) chainset with the more rounded looking right crank arm. 15"-1"7"-1"9-22-25 freewheel. Catalog shows an oval headbadge but my 8/62 frame has a round "S" headbadge. Script "Schwinn" on top tube, "VARSITY 10 SPEED" in white panel on down tube. Checkered seat tube panel. Weinmann "890" side pull brakes. Saddle Ideale (#42). Schwinn tubular steel rims. Schwinn low flange steel front hub. Atom alloy low flange rear hub. Tire size was 26 x 1-3/8. colors were Radiant Red, Radiant Blue, and Radiant Green. Frame sizes 19" and 21" $66.95; 23" $68.95. These prices are from the consumer brochure. The Dealer lists them at $69.95 and 71.95, and the model and price sheet lists them as $72.95 and $74.95.

Note: The 1962 parts & accessories catalog list the saddle as Ideale #42 on the Varsity, but I have 1960 & 1962 model Varsities which both have Ideale #41 saddles on them that look to be original.

Note: My 2/17/64 Sierra came with an old logo Huret front derailleur with a factory looking shim to reduce the clamp diameter from 1.125" to 1.000". Rear derailleur was Sprint. Shifters were Sprint logo. Brake calipers were the older engraved logo Weinmann Vainquer 999. Brake levers were Weinmann with red button quick release. The chainset was Huret branded. Saw another 2/6/04 Sierra that had the early scribed logo Sprint front derailleur and Huret Allvit rear derailleur.
