I bought this bike from eBay and it had been sitting for about 10 years. I have over the past year refurbished it back into functioning and somewhat original condition. The paint isn't great, the decals are pretty good and it was originally sold at Racine Bike Shop or at least it had been sold from that shop at some point. Kenda tires, Jaqwire metallic brake housings and everything greased and ready to ride. I may take this one downashore next year.

I've refurbished eight bikes over the past year and right now I'm working on a Peugeot Orient Express Mountain bike which is pretty nice. I'll post pictures of my bikes over the next days. Here are some of the 3 speed Suburban.

Correct me if I am wrong but the 3 speed first gen Suburban is a bit of a rare bird? Only made in 1970 and 1971?

Yup, only two years. One year only for Black and one year only for White Men's

That bike looks like it is in very good shape!

If it were mine, I'd probably put a 21 or 22 tooth rear sprocket on it, the better to get the substantial weight of me and the old bike moving.

Just something to think about.

I do have some larger rear cogs for the SA AW. I got them from your guy that sells the crank cotter tool. I think I have a 20 and a 22. I gave another one to my Navy buddy in Oregon because of the situation you described. The Bikesmith Designs. It doesn't appear that he still sells the cogs.

Sweet Jeff. A very nice RARE bird. 1970 (Jubilee) was the year of the 3speed Suburban.

That was a nice pick up, and I can appreciate how you feel.

I found that same bike, the second 'real' bike I acquired after
rekindling biking as a routine practice...a June '70 5 speed, black,
looks to be same size (23.5"). Black was used again in '76, using white striping, not gold.

The stem is what drew my attention, chromed steel quill minus the oval side indents
as on yours. I have never seen a stem like it. Maybe the first owner added it idk.

The bike has been rebuilt, and I treasure it.

Mark is getting pretty old. He has been run down by cars about 5 or 6 times, both on bicycles and motorcycles. I'm surprised he is still alive.
If you need something, it is worth it to email and ask. He has stuff.

Nice job JeffC.  That is a fine rider.  Black with gold plus the gumwalls is very deluxe.

Thanks. It sat gathering dust for some time and I finally got to it. It needed cables and tires as per the usual but the rest of it cleaned up rather well. It originally came with the highly sought after clear reflector bow pedals of 1970 but I sold them at the Trexlertown bike swap for the same as what I paid for the entire bike. I have yellow reflector bow pedals for it and I'm going to swap them out for the Union waffle repops that are on it now. As soon as it warms up in my basement. It's 10 degrees outside and 55 degrees in my basement. Too cold brrrrrrrrr. :(
